In his early film career, Mr. Carlson was often cast as a romantic male lead, or lead juvenile in such films as The Ghost Breakers (1940) with Bob Hope, The Howards of Virginia (1940) with Cary Grant, Too Many Girls (1940) with Lucille Ball, Hold That Ghost (1941) with Abbott and Costello, and The Little Foxes (1941) with Bette Davis.
