In the silent film era, he earned recognition in such pictures as <em>Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde<\/em> (1920), <em>Sherlock Holmes<\/em> (1922) and <em>The Sea Beast<\/em> (1926). When sound films were introduced, his theater-skilled voice bolstered motion pictures such as Grand Hotel (1932), Twentieth Century (1934) and Midnight (1939) \u2013 with all three having been inducted into the National Film Registry.
